Has the first observed Gila Monster in Oregon actually been photographed? Actually, this picture was taken by John's friend Alan Winans about 50 years ago in the lava lands just southeast of the Wasco County line. The "Gila Monster" in the photograph is no more than a product of differential weathering of the basalt bedrock that gives the appearance of a crouching lizard!
