About the event

Note: Creation Encounter has been closely following state restrictions and reopening. As such, this trip will proceed as long as Skamania County is at Phase 3 reopening and the roads to the East Side are open, which we hope will be the case in late June/early July.

A classic weekend expedition, this tour was resurrected last year with numerous improvements; it quickly became so popular that Creation Encounter has decided to offer it once more in commemoration of the fortieth anniversary of Mount St. Helens 1980 eruption! Exploring all three major regions of Mount St. Helens, we investigate the astounding eruption and subsequent biological recovery that has shaped this dynamic area.

Join creation scientists John Hergenrather, Edward Isaacs, and Dr. Keith Swenson on this three-day/two-night, kid-friendly expedition to discover “hands-on” evidence of how geology can happen quickly! The 1980 events at Mt. St. Helens provide us with a miniature modeling of both the geological and biological processes occurring during and following the Great Flood of Noah's day. We also will observe how biological recovery after a catastrophe can happen rapidly. We plan to camp Friday and Saturday nights at the centrally located Eagle Cliff Campground and Store which is 20 miles east of Cougar WA.

Our three day “car caravan” will begin Friday morning at the Mount St. Helens Creation Center with a great introduction from director Paul Taylor; then we'll take a guided walk the Hummocks Trail and visit the educational Johnston Ridge Observatory. The second day Dr. Swenson will lead us to the spectacular east side with a hike to Spirit Lake and the log mat, the sand ladder at Windy Ridge, Bear Meadow, and more. The third day we will break camp and spend the day on the interesting South side. Here explore the giant trees in Cedar Flat Old Growth Forest, ponder the power of mudflows at Pine Creek Boulder and along Lava Canyon Trail (which includes a safe suspension bridge) and walk into huge lava tubes (when lava flowed out underground from beneath hardening lava) and crawl into tree casts (when lava flowed around trees).

The suggested donation is $185 for families or $100 for an individual and includes all guiding, instruction and evening programs. Also, each family and school age child will receive a Mt.St. Helens creation field journal/notebook which we have developed for Christian Schools. It contains a summary of creation research topics and quizzes, places for sketching and coloring, and other educational activities. Eagle Cliff Campground & Store is a great place to stay. Creation Encounter has already reserved and paid for our 7 tent and RV sites (no hook ups) and three cabins so DO NOT MAKE YOUR OWN RESERVATIONS. You will pay John for your preference upon arrival. To register for this event click on "Register Now" and fill out the form including your preference for campsite or cabin - first come, first serve.

--Please also note that we have been implementing an Acknowledgement of Risk for our tours---
