About the event
This event has been canceled and/or postponed until further notice; see our event status page.
Plentiful wildlife and sunny weather usually greet us on this leisurely hike along the lower Deschutes River. Despite the entire area being burned in 2018, we look forward to discussing fire recovery but may shorten the hike from the usual 4.5 miles roundtrip depending on the level of recovery. We’ll encounter a variety of plants, animals and rocks, but our emphasis will be on the insects, birds and fire recovery. Bring your binoculars and a daypack with lunch. We’ll watch migratory birds in the beautiful stream-side habitat and discuss the marvels that our Creator has endowed them. We will also see remnants of the old Oregon Trail, find occasional granite boulders and muse on how they got there.
At 8:30 am we will meet at the south end of the Deschutes River Campground located 16 miles east of The Dalles. We will take a few minutes for introductions and hand out some helpful information on what we will be seeing. For these day trips, we request a donation of $25 per family or $15 for the individual, which can be payed in person on the day of the tour. Cash or checks addressed to "John Hergenrather" will be fine.
